How Does This Look: Confidence

September 20, 2018

Welcome to our 3rd post in our six-part series called “How Does This Look?”, where we are walking you through all the elements of picking the right look for your next photo session!

Before you move on to today’s topic be sure to check out our first two topics:

  1. Fundamentals of Style – My Blog Post + Toyin’s Blog Post
  2. Your Style vs. Photography Aesthetic – My Blog Post + Toyin’s Blog Post

Now today we’re talking all about…Confidence! This is probably one of my top favorite posts of the whole series!

To be honest, this is the key to looking amazing in all aspects of life, but especially in photographs.

Change Your Mindset

This is huge. I know a photography session can be intimidating, but do what you can to ease your nerves and your mind. Honestly, all you have to do is show up and be YOU. Your photographer will help you with the rest, you just have to trust them!

So show up to your session with confidence. Know you look amazing, because you DO! And picking out outfits that you feel great in will be the best way to boost your confidence for your session. Wear something that helps give you that extra boost you need to show up feeling like Beyonce!

Trust Your Photographer With Posing

Often something clients tell me before they come to a photo session or at the start of a session is:

“My boyfriend/fiance is not photogenic at all, you’re really going to have to work with us.”

“We don’t know what we’re doing and we can use all the help we can get.”

” We are really awkward in front of the camera can you help tell us exactly what to do?”

But let me tell you, all my clients do an amazing job with posing! Even the ones who are super nervous and uncomfortable. Seriously!

The key is trust. Show up to your session trusting that your photographer will help pose you in ways that are flattering for you and will show off all your best assets.

I always guide my clients through exactly what I want from them and lead them through series of poses and activites. So no prep work is needed on your part!

Tip: If there is something SPECIFIC that you want your photographer to be aware of be sure to tell them. If you have insecurities about your chin, your arms, or whatever it may be, tell your photographer that! That way they can be aware of that and be sure to help take images in a way that you will love and be happy with.

Treat Yo’ Self

I recommend treating yourself before your photography session so you have the extra bit of confidence about you. Here are a few examples of confidence boosting activities, but you can do whatever works for you!

  • Get a massage
  • Go for a hike
  • Get your nails done
  • Get your hair cut/colored
  • Take a bubble bath
  • Whiten your teeth

I hope these tips help ease your fears and give you ideas on how to bring a little more confidence with you on your photo shoot!
